New DHSC value based procurement guidance for medical technology was published on 11th June.
Nick Lansman, CEO and founder of the Health Tech Alliance, comments: “The Health Tech Alliance warmly welcomes the publication of the Value-Based Procurement guidance. This is something we, and our members, have been advocating for since our Procurement Sub-Group series and Procurement Report in 2024-5.
“It’s encouraging to see years of collaborative work with DHSC culminate in a clear, structured framework that puts patient outcomes and whole life value at the heart of NHS procurement decisions.
“For too long, procurement spend has been driven by unit cost rather than the broader value a technology delivers to patients, clinicians and the health system. By requiring NHS buyers to assess clinical outcomes, patient experience, supply chain resilience and sustainability alongside cost, it creates the conditions for the NHS to spend on the right things, not just the cheapest things.
“Implementation will be the critical test. The guidance must now be consistently adopted across NHS trusts, NHS Supply Chain and ICBs to deliver the shift it promises. Uneven uptake would undermine both its intent and the confidence of suppliers investing in robust evidence generation. We are encouraged by the commitment to training procurement teams and retaining the pilot team to support the transition.
“The Health Tech Alliance looks forward to continuing our engagement with DHSC through the implementation stages, ensuring that the voices of healthtech suppliers, including SMEs and innovators, are reflected as the methodology matures and embeds across the system.”
